This course is ideal for climbers who have outdoor climbing experience as a second climber and are excited to start leading their climbs!
We will customize the course to suit your ability and skill level. You do not need to be climbing high difficulty grades in order to learn to lead. What is more important is that you have a solid grasp on the basic safety procedures. If you are not confident in your skills, consider first taking our Climbing Basics Refresher course
What you will learn
Fixed protection types and corresponding considerations
Preparing to lead: rack organization, stacking the rope, belayer position and communication
Leading: rope management and clipping methods
Top rope anchor building and cleaning
Multi-pitch belay station setup
Avoiding factor-2 falls
Belaying the seconder
Transition at the station: gear and rope management for lead swapping and non-swapping situations
Climbing in a party of three: roping and transition techniques
Building rappel stations and multi-pitch rappelling
Problem-solving in challenging situations (example: rope gets stuck in a multi-pitch rappel)
Basic rock rescue and improvisation
Sport ethics

Prior multi-pitch experience (as a second climber) is required. This course is not intended for first-time or beginner climbers
All fitness levels are welcome

Two days, approximately 6 hours per day
